Ischa Freimaak!
Bremen’s carnival season
As the nights start to draw in, Bremen lights up! For 17 eventful days, the riverside city goes wild and becomes a hotbed of high spirits and late-night partying. Bremen in Freimarkt fever – streamers and balloons, aromatic gingerbread hearts and bright red toffee apples, smiling faces and thrill-seekers. Every year, millions of people come from near and far to experience this spectacular event: No other fair offers so many different fairground attractions as the Bremen Freimarkt. And the party in the city on the Weser is truly like no other. Every year since 1035, the city has celebrated its »trading rights«,
preserving the longest funfair tradition in Germany.
Fun and frolics at the Freimarkt
Come and enjoy yourself, there’s something for everyone. Want to see the world upside down? Fly through the air? Feel your heart in your stomach and tingle with excitement? Then what are you waiting for, hop aboard the roller coasters, big wheel or ghost train.
Covering an area of 100,000m², the fair has 320 attractions offering non-stop entertainment. Some of the fairground rides are state-of-the-art and extremely high-tech.
But if that all sounds a little raucous, head for the city’s market square and the »little freimarkt«. This is truly a festival for the senses, with piping hot doughnuts, roasted almonds and spicy liquorice set out on traditional-style stands. When the bell sounds to indicate it’s time for a ride on one of the old-fashioned carousels, it’s not only the kids’ eyes that light up! The journey back in time to the beginnings of the »free market« starts just around the corner. The Middle Ages begin between the walls of the town hall and the Church of Our Lady. Merchants sell their wares in the market village of 1382, blacksmiths, glassblowers and stonemasons show off their handicraft over open fi res, and street performers and singers tell of times gone by.
Freimarkt-Ticket
The Freimarkt Ticket offers 25 per cent discount on all fairground rides. There are three different tickets – for children, families and »high-fl yers« – which are available from the Weser Kurier newspaper customer centre, the Bremen Tourist Information offices Obernstrasse/Liebfrauenkirchhof and the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) and at the service point at the Freimarkt.
Carnival procession – miss it, miss out!
On Saturday, one week into the Freimarkt, the whole of Bremen’s city centre will be in party mood. People dressed to the nines in glittering costumes stand on imaginatively decorated fl oats and throw sweets and candy canes into the crowds. To the sounds of sultry samba rhythms, heavy techno beats and traditional brass band music, the procession makes it’s way towards the Freimarkt at the »Bürgerweide«, with thousands of revellers singing and dancing close behind.
Party until dawn
The Freimarkt is an exciting event. Even the most reserved locals let their hair down as party fever sweeps through the whole of Bremen. Thousands of partygoers sway and dance in the Bavarian tent, listen to rock and pop music with surprise celebrity guests in the Hanseatic tent, flock to the Riverboat to hear the best jazz and Dixieland music or meet after 8pm in Hall 7 for Freimarkt by Night – the city‘s largest party.
