Market Square – Bremen’s friendly ‘reception room’

Standing on the Hanseatic Cross in the middle of the Market Square, you are looking at the Rathaus with its remarkable Weser Renaissance facade and the Roland statue, the city’s ‘statue of liberty’. The building and the effigy have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2004. On the right you will see St Petri Cathedral and the Bürgerschaft, Bremen’s State Parliament building. Opposite the Rathaus is Schütting mansion, which houses the local Chamber of Commerce.

On its left lies the entrance to Böttcherstrasse and on its right the Kontorhaus. With a variety of places to eat and drink, the western end features the Savings Bank, Council Apothecary, Akzise and the Deutsches Haus.
